Peter Falk says he supplied Columbo coat

SAGINAW, MICH - Peter Falk, who played the rumpled, crime-solving police lieutenant in the "Columbo" television series starting in 1971 and in made-for-TV movies until 2003, said he was dissatisfied with the stylish clothes laid out for him to consider for the show's debut.

Falk said he brought a shabby old raincoat from home and asked the show's wardrobe department to dye one of the suits a dull brown.

When told to go pick a car for Columbo on the studio lot, he found nothing to his liking.

"They all looked alike, and then I saw it way in the back, just its nose — an ugly Peugeot," Falk told The Saginaw News before an area public appearance Tuesday. "And it had the perfect touch ... a flat tire."

Falk, 79, has 13 Emmy, two Oscar and nine Golden Globe nominations. He said he helped create the look as well as the mannerisms of the character that made him famous.

"I love the guy," Falk said. "I was very lucky to have a character that rich, that I like personally so much. The whole thing was an actor's dream — getting a character that tickles you so much you can't wait to act as him." [SOURCE]

Parent criticizes book 'Fahrenheit 451'

A Caney Creek High School dad is fired up because the Conroe Independent School District uses the book "Fahrenheit 451" as classroom reading material.

Alton Verm, of Conroe, objects to the language and content in the book. His 15-year-old daughter Diana, a CCHS sophomore, came to him Sept. 21 with her reservations about reading the book because of its language.

"The book had a bunch of very bad language in it," Diana Verm said. "It shouldn't be in there because it's offending people. ... If they can't find a book that uses clean words, they shouldn't have a book at all."

"It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read "Fahrenheit 451." "The words don't need to be brought out in class. I want to get the book taken out of the class."

"Fahrenheit 451" is a science fiction piece that poses a warning to society about the preservation and passing on of knowledge as well as asks the question about whether the government should do the thinking for the people. Other themes include conformity vs. individuality, freedom of speech and the consequences of losing it, the importance of remembering and understanding history and technology as help to humans and as hindrances to humans.

Museum Field Trip Deemed Too Revealing

FRISCO, Tex., Sept. 28 — “Keep the ‘Art’ in ‘Smart’ and ‘Heart,’ ” Sydney McGee had posted on her Web site at Wilma Fisher Elementary School in this moneyed boomtown that is gobbling up the farm fields north of Dallas.

But Ms. McGee, 51, a popular art teacher with 28 years in the classroom, is out of a job after leading her fifth-grade classes last April through the Dallas Museum of Art. One of her students saw nude art in the museum, and after the child’s parent complained, the teacher was suspended.

Although the tour had been approved by the principal, and the 89 students were accompanied by 4 other teachers, at least 12 parents and a museum docent, Ms. McGee said, she was called to the principal the next day and “bashed.”

She later received a memorandum in which the principal, Nancy Lawson, wrote: “During a study trip that you planned for fifth graders, students were exposed to nude statues and other nude art representations.” It cited additional complaints, which Ms. McGee has challenged.

The school board suspended her with pay on Sept. 22.

Jack Nicholson in a Martin Scorsese film? With Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg in the cast as well? Are you kidding?

No, I am not.

"The Departed," which I saw on Friday night, is a rocking comedy-of-a-gangster-shoot-out stuffed with great performances both big and small by all these guys, and Scorsese — who returns to his favorite genre — is the puppeteer pulling the strings.

Actually, he's not pulling all the strings. Nicholson is completely "out there" and over the edge in a performance that will either win him kudos or tomatoes (I vote for the former) as a psychopathic killer who has no personal boundaries and works, shall we say, outside the margins of even recognized behavior for organized crime.

In one scene, Nicholson pulls out a sex toy and surprises Damon in a movie theater. In another, he wears sunglasses all the way through despite, I'm told, Scorsese's wishes that he didn't.

But you can see that Nicholson took to his work with relish, and — as he did with The Joker in "Batman" — he makes sure no one forgets him.

And while "Gangs" had its share of crazy, unpredictable, graphic violence, really nothing prepares you for the bloodletting in "The Departed." It's at once maniacal and casual, and would make Tony Soprano and his gang run for the hills.

Scorsese remains our greatest director, surpassed by no one. He is also part of a dying breed of grand auteurs that includes Robert Altman, Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola. The rest of them now have one thing Scorsese doesn't: an Oscar.

This is a sore point for the Academy. If Scorsese isn't nominated for one this year, I think it's time he got a Lifetime Achievement Award. "The Departed" is so far above what we see in theaters these days. But standards are so low now, I'm just worried new audiences won't appreciate it.

In August, the faux right-wing newscaster on cable television's Comedy Central told his fans to vote on the Saginaw Spirit Web site to have the hockey team's new mini-mascot named after him.

The video board in TheDow Event Center's Wendler Arena will play a recorded or live message from Colbert, host of the "The Colbert Report," at the start of the Saturday, Sept. 30, game.
The game will begin at 7:11 p.m.

"We want to have every seat in the house filled that night," said Spirit Managing Partner Craig M. Goslin. "We want the arena full and people cheering in the stands, because they are going to show all of this on the air."

"The Colbert Report" staff will record the announcement and play it on the Monday, Oct. 2, episode. The show airs at 11:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Hilton was arrested shortly before 12:30 a.m. after being pulled over in Hollywood, said police Officer I. Isabella, who declined to give his first name.
Police stopped Hilton because she was "driving erratically," he said.

"The officers observed that Hilton exhibited the symptoms of intoxication. A field sobriety test was conducted at scene, and the officers determined she was driving under the influence," Isabella said, reading a police statement.

A dance teacher who took part in a national air guitar competition on the spur of the moment has begun researching for a PhD in the subject.

Amanda Griffiths, originally from Mold, was offered the place at the University of Salford after meeting a pop music academic on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour.

She began her studies in January and is preparing to give a lecture at an air guitar training camp in Finland.

"I'm fascinated, some might say obsessed, with air guitar," she said.

"I made a mad decision to enter a competition in Manchester. I did it sort of on the spur of the moment, " said Ms Griffiths.

"I had always done air guitar when I was tipsy at weddings and that sort of thing but I only entered on the day of the competition - it might have had something to so with coming up to my 30th birthday." More....

3 Men Charged With Attempted Sex Assault On Corpse

September 6, 2006

CASSVILLE, Wis. -- The three men arrested for allegedly digging up the grave of a woman who died last week in Grant County are also charged with attempted sexual assault.

The three men appeared in Grant County Circuit Court on Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint, the three men were charged with digging up the grave at the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Cassville with the intent to have sex with the victim's body, WISC-TV reported.

Alexander Grunke, his twin brother Nicholas Grunke and their friend Dustin Radke -- all 20 years old -- have been in a Grant County jail since Saturday.

Authorities said that Radke said that the three stopped at the Wal-Mart in Dodgeville on their way to the cemetery and bought condoms.

The grave that the men are accused of trying to dig up belonged to Laura Tennessen, 20, of Cassville, who was buried last week after being killed in a motorcycle crash on Aug. 28.

I don't know if this has ever happened to any of you guys. I like to call it the "cock brush" It's when you are walking to the side of one your friends and then for some odd reason your friends hand hits your crotch zone by accident. Or even worse the roles switch and you by accident hit his zone. It always seems to happen to me when I hang out with my friends and only until now I have realized that the whole "cock brush" is more awkward than I have previously thought because there is not a great way to handle that quick situation. You can either: A) Ignore it, but that sort makes you accept it as normal. B) bring it up and make fun of your friend (but then you are just being a dick and c'mon now "gay jokes" are so middle school) There is no safe way out. I think I tend to ignore it, but even when I do I know for a fact that my friend knows that he touched me and then I can only imagine what he is thinking ("man, I just touched Ramses' dick zone and he's cool with it, what a fag.")

The sad part is that not one of my girl friends has ever accidentally "cock brushed" me. This is sad because I tend to be optimistic and in my mind if one of them would ever by accident do so, I think that maybe they would be massively impressed.

Movies I Like: La Dolce Vita (1960)

How in the hell did Federico Fellini make La Dolce Vita? I just watched it this evening for the umpteenth time, and it has never once bored me. It’s the fastest 176 minutes out there. The films also backs up Stanley Kubrick’s quote, "If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed."

La Dolce Vita seems to be a moment captured in time. The film is like a line drawn in the sand between black ink gossip magazines and the dawn of the media culture. La Dolce Vita is also about deception, of what’s real and fake. Federico Fellini examines that theme in the film like no other motion picture before or since. Take for instance the images that open and close the film (Jesus statue, dead fish). How about the young girl who tries to communicate with Marcello on the beach at the very end of the picture? Or how Marcello’s father finds out that the party life isn’t all that cracked up to be?

La Dolce Vita is a cornucopia of a movie. The film is alive like few films are. Every scene is momentum towards the finale on the beach. After watching the movie, you always feel cheated that there isn’t more. Damn you Fellini!

Las Vegas Wedding

Getting closer now. Yes, it will only be 4 more days till Mary and I will head off to the beautiful Las Vegas, the City of Sin.

Total comfort was the plan of this trip. When I'm getting married and going to Vegas, I'm going all out. First of all, Mary and I will be leaving Saginaw for Detroit Metro @ 2pm. Going to eat in Detroit, then head to Metro to catch our flight @ 8:30pm. We will arrive in Las Vegas @ 10:30pm, and will be escorted to our hotel from the airport.

We will be staying at the fabulous MGM Grand Hotel right on the strip. Featuring such resturants as Emeril's and nightclubs as Studio 54. Not to mention the large pool area, that I have shown here.

Mary and I will be in a "Celebrity Spa Suite". Which MGM claims is 694 sq. feet of hotel room. Double vanity sinks, 32in Flat-Panel TV, Jaccuzzi tub, and king sized bed. Granted, we won't be spending alot of time in the hotel room. But, when it is time to consummate the marriage I wanted to make sure there was plenty of space to do it in.

I am also very excited to have the chance of going to "The Star Trek Experience" in the Hilton. As a Trek nerd, collectables & people dressed up as Klingons get my motor running. I at least want to have some "Blood Wine" with a Klingon, or maybe some "Romulan Ale" with a Romulan. With all the sights to see, it will be very doubtful that Mary and I will see everything.

So look forward for next Monday, when I will post photos and more commentary on our trip.
